Wandering if anyone has taken apart one of these. I'm at a stop since I have removed the screws on the housing. Im not wanting to force anything and the downloaded manual doesn't do as good of breaking down the steps as some sony walkman manuals. Wandering if there is a trick to it. I have taken apart about 8 different models and this one seems a little bit different. Thanks
Sony WM-DX100 Disassembly?

what does this look like I may have this if it is a sony
Can you show a picture of yours of the Front of it and any other pictures you can share would be most helpful.... mere second's ago I just posted the end of my repair of the wm-22 with a HD video. ok your turn
Give me a bit after dinner I will attempt to do that. I haven't posted any pics yet to this sight so I will have to try.

having my beef-tips with rice in Red bowl as I read this and now took a pic of this screen it's so simple to add a picture to here - this is straight from the camera... IMG_2031

So here are a few shots with the screws taken out of the drive side. I will take a shot of the transport as I forgot to get that one. One of the screws on battery connection side loosened the door hinge. I believe this unitDD to be fairly rare. Close to the time of the WM-DD9.
Here is the EX Amorphous head. This deck isn't working as the lights respond to the buttons but no sound or movement internally. I would like to open it up but it seems to be tight and Im not familiar with this one.

I had to remove the door for the gumstick battery and it came off pretty easy. Note the photo of the belt near the silver motor as it looks like it is doubled on itself? Thought I'd let you know. Now maybe i can get it to respond.

is the motor spring loaded to touch against the brass idler?
Is there a tire that the end of the motor drives or rubs upon?
Yes, this model has a tire on the 1st flywheel. It is a mix between the DD mechanism and a 90s EX belt drive design with PLL controlled motor. Your belt configuration seems to be wrong. The belt seems to have wrapped itself around the first flywheel, jamming the mechanism. Attached is a picture of the belt layout from the service manual. If the belt is stretched, it may need to be replaced.
From what I can tell, they blended the two mechanisms together to reduce the thickness and cost of the DD9. While the addition of a capstan belt cheapens the machine and probably increases the wow and flutter figures, the engineers at Sony probably saw it as a passable compromise. This mechanism, as far as I know is only seen in this single model. Definitely an interesting machine.

As Bub says yes there is a tire and not sure about the spring loaded to touch brass idler. There is a spring near the base of the motor but its mounted to the frame of the motor and attached to a bracket. The belt was stretched and I replaced it with another one. So far it is working but I need to clean the pulleys. Im getting a little fluttering. The speed is slow so I do have a copy of the service manual I downloaded and there are to adjustment screws which need adjusted. This is different indeed from the rest of my walkmans since you normally just adjust the speed of the motor. If anyone can chime in on the easiest way to adjust this as the service manual is a little beyond me on its procedure. I always just adjust by matching speed to an mp3.
Unfortunately you will need to accurately follow the procedure in the manual to get an accurate result from the quartz lock. There is a pad marked TAP LAND you will have to desolder and resolder, as described in the manual.
If your belt is of the correct size and thickness, it is unlikely you will need to adjust the speed on a quartz lock walkman such as this one in my experience.
If you don't have a 3000hz test tape, you can record one from a known good deck or one with a good quartz lock (like a Walkman D6C, which in my experience is usually pretty spot on). Connect the walkman to your computer's line in, and use a software frequency counter to get a reading. I use this oscilloscope software to adjust my walkmans:
http://www.zeitnitz.eu/scope_e...en7gmen837g715sksfe6
Reason for this detail is that the Manual states that you have to adjust to over speed (3080hz) on RV601 before resoldering TAP LAND for the main speed controller, and then RV602 (3000hz) for the Quartz lock. You may be able to get away with just adjusting one of them until the music sounds right, But I have no idea if it will work properly as I do not own one.
It's a relatively simple procedure as long as you can get the 3000hz test tape recorded, know how to do basic soldering and have a computer with a line-in.
I think I will try a brand new belt after cleaning the pulleys, tire etc before any mechanical adjustment. I did a generic cleaning on the components, put a tighter belt on that was a defective belt that caused wow and flutter on other units. The old belt was on the verge of breakdown and I want to make sure those deep valleys on the pulleys are free of any residue. I will see what happens after these procedures and let you know Bub, thank you.
Just an update as I am putting this walkman on hold until I get my belt sizes measured. I have learned a lot here recently from trial and error of the importance of the proper size belts. I recently aquired a wm-501 and it had the original belt and it looked to be loose a little so I put the closest belt I had to it and it sounded pretty darn bad. The wow and flutter was pretty bad and the speed was slow. I did the repairs that needed done and did all the cleaning and maint and it still sounded the same with the newer belt. I put the old one on and wow as the sound was so much better. It was lacking in depth full sound like my other walkmans so I adjusted the azimuth and again wow. A great sounding walkman. Im glad Im getting decks that have the original belts still intact. Will update on the dx100 when I get it completed.
